Sealed at Runnymede in 1215, Magna Carta limited the power of the Crown and protected the rights of nobles. It remains relevant today and is still cited regularly by human rights defenders around the world. It is significant that two of the four surviving copies are owned by Cathedrals, for the document contains much that supports the Christian principle that all are made in the image and likeness of God; many of the detailed provisions concerned protecting the livelihoods of common people.
